I've been really happy with the Porsche designed LaCie drives. I have a few,
one firewire-bus-powered (no separate power cord) 60G model which is great
for portability and two of the larger, cheaper drives that require a
separate power cord (one firewire and one USB 2.0--and they both use the
same model of power cord). At the times I've bought them from New Egg,
Amazon and the LaCie store they were among the best-priced drives (and I'd
initially thought that the "style" thing was what you were paying for)
second only to building your own with a hard drive and enclosure.
I use the 60G one-cord-wonder for GarageBanding (with all my GB libraries on
that drive). I've never had any problems, and at least one of the drives was
refurbished. Check out LaCie's clearance center and you can sometimes find
great deals on refurbished models.
