[Hardcider] fontbook and unusual characters

I was looking at the fontbook to examine all of the unusual  
characters in a particular font for a logo, but can't figure out how  
to get that character actually into a program as its not one of the  
usual characters on a keyboard.  Does anyone know where to look for a  
mapping of how to use these unusual characters?  I tried double  
clicking on one to no avail :-(
